'2001' cosplay of space station astronaut kicks off with thrift store

The first European space station commander’s list of items was missing one thing: the thrift store costume.

Samantha Cristoforetti was docked with the International Space Station on a special leisure mission last April: costume game (opens in new tab) As the famous flight attendant in the movie “2001: A Space Odyssey”. To replicate the officer’s Pan-Am style costume, Cristoforetti needed a full-length white body topped with a snow-colored hat. “This is not something I would normally buy for myself,” Cristoforetti told Space.com at a post-flight press conference with other SpaceX Crew-4 members on Thursday, October 20. “But it seemed to fit perfectly for that need.”

The picture-perfect movie replica was a demonstration of the teamwork Cristoforetti instilled during his brief command of space station operations with the six-month orbital Expedition 67/68 mission ending October 14.
