'Harry Potter' star Tom Felton remembers going to rehab three times for alcohol abuse: 'Drinking to get away'

“Harry Potter” actor Tom Felton talks about his past battle with alcohol addiction, which has sent him to rehab multiple times.

In Felton’s new memoir, “Beyond the Wand: The Magic and Mayhem of Growing Up a Wizard,” she shared that she drank heavily to “escape” in her 20s, revealing her struggles with mental health.

According to the quotes, “Drinking becomes a habit at the best of times… When you drink to escape a situation, and even more so. The habit spilled out of the bar and occasionally went on set,” Felton said, according to the quotes. Shared by Entertainment Weekly.

The 35-year-old star admitted that he had frequented many dive bars in Los Angeles, and that this had deeply affected his professional work.

“It got to a point where I didn’t think about having a drink while I was working. I was coming off unprepared, not the professional I wanted to be. Still, alcohol wasn’t the problem. That was the symptom.”

Felton is best known for his role as Draco Malfoy in “Harry Potter” – Radcliffe’s nemesis in the mega-hit series.

The “Harry Potter” star was candid and noted in his memoirs that he arranged an intervention for his ex-girlfriend, Jade Olivia, to help with his alcohol addiction, including a plan to send him to rehab.

Felton admitted that his agents, managers and lawyers had written him a letter expressing concern about his bad drinking habits. He noted that he was “in no condition to hear them”.

However, a letter caused the actor to change his perspective and take the “hardest blow”.

He went on to say that while trying to recover, he faced many challenges, including escaping a rehabilitation facility less than 24 hours after checking in. Felton added that he was kicked out of another center after he was discovered in a woman’s room.

Following these events, Felton wrote that another period of rehabilitation helped her get back on track.

“I’m not alone in having these feelings,” she wrote.

“Just as we all experience physical health issues at some point in our lives, we all experience mental health issues as well. There’s no shame in that. It’s not a sign of weakness. And that’s one of the reasons why I made the decision. Writing these pages is to help someone who is struggling, by sharing my experiences. It’s my hope that I can help.”

Felton also shared in his memoirs that he secretly had romantic feelings for his co-star. Emma Watson. The actor admitted that there was a “spark” between him and the 32-year-old actor.

“I loved and admired him as a person I could never explain to anyone else,” she wrote.
